Can I get an AMEN?

We live in a "culture of excessive doting": "... American students often view lower grades as a reason to 'hit you up for an A because they came to class and feel they worked hard,' says Prof. Chance. He wishes more parents would offer kids this perspective: 'The world owes you nothing. You have to work and compete. If you want to be special, you'll have to prove it.'"

You get a big, fat, all-in-caps "AMEN!" from me. I totally believe in ego-building and want children to have a positive sense of self. But that doesn't mean it has to be an unrealistic one. We had 3rd graders this year arguing with the teacher about everything, not just grades. And it isn't just one or two of them with these feelings of entitlement. I don't mean to sound like I'm saying "Children should know their place" and have that mean I brush off their importance as people. But more and more are definitely being raised to believe they are the centers of their own little universes, and that's not helpful to them in the long run (as well as being a PITA for others right now;).
