The Great LOST Rewatch

Guess what I got for Christmas? All 5 seasons of LOST!! Thank you, Sheila!!

It's a pipe dream, I know, but I am going to try my best to watch them all before Feb. 2. Impossible, yes, but I'll have a good time trying. The Great LOST Rewatch began yesterday, when I managed to knock off the first 8 episodes while archiving photos and doing laundry. I hadn't seen the Pilot since it first aired, and a few things stood out for me:

1. Jack trying to save everyone - well established right off the bat.
2. The first 2 words out of Michael's mouth: "WALT! WALT!" Ha!
3. The music really stands out, and it continued as a character throughout the series run
4. Sayid: "You think they would have come by now." Oh, Sayid, you have no idea.
5. One of the moments that really nailed the show's tone: When Kate is removing a dead person's boots and Locke smiles at her with the orange peel in his mouth. When I watched that, I remembered thinking, "What the hell is this show?" In a good way.
6. I remembered how much I didn't really care for Shannon or Boone.

Mostly, re-watching the Pilot proved that among the many things that make LOST such a great show, the characters are probably the most important. They arrive in the Pilot almost fully formed, and are acted so well.

Only 91 more episodes to go. I'd better get crackin'!

My favorite TV critics shoot the shit about LOST.

Fantastic transcript of a converstation between Mo Ryan,Alan Sepinwall and TIME critic James Poniewozik, about LOST and expectations for its final season. (No spoilers!)

Snippet:
Ryan: What do you guys think “Lost's” legacy will be? Is it a one-off or is it going to have some kind of lasting influence? I really go back and forth on that.

Poniewozik: I actually was just thinking about this, because I had not been thinking about “Lost” in the off season, but I started watching the remake of “The Prisoner,” [which aired Nov. 15-17 on AMC] and you can’t watch any iteration of “The Prisoner” without thinking about how much “Lost” goes to that.

I don’t think “Lost” is a one-off, but I also don’t think that we’ll see a lot of mini-"Losts" every year after that. I think it [ties into] the theory of the eternal return. There will just be one of them that comes like a comet every 10 years You get your “Prisoner” and you get your “Twin Peaks” and you get “Lost." There will always be some obsessive who watched “Lost” when he was a kid, or watched the “Prisoner” when she was a kid or whatever. And so that’s going to continue to be remade in some way or another.

Sepinwall: But I think the interesting thing that differentiates “Lost,” even from “The Prisoner,” is that “Lost,” at least for a while, was insanely popular. It was a cult show with a huge mass audience. And most of that audience has kind of run straight into the time travel and the polar bear cages and all that. But this idea that you can do a show this complicated and this weird and have this much sci-fi content in it and yet get that kind of audience -- I don’t know that that’s ever going to happen again.

Poniewozik: Well, you won’t have that kind of audience again, yeah. [Future shows might not] necessarily need that kind of audience. Yeah, as a mass phenomenon, you may be right.

Sepinwall: And the other thing is – you’ll see lots of shows like this and we’ve seen a lot of shows be made like it in the few years that “Lost” has been on, but you’ll very rarely see shows this good.

TV Talk: Round Up

And boy do I have a lot to round up!

As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I'm not feeling inspired to write much about what I'm watching right now. Part of the reason for that is that some of what I'm watching is at best lackluster - FlashFoward, I'm looking at you - or just showing promise (that would be "V"), and that's leaving me plain uninspired.

Two of my favorites, however - one that just ended its second season, and one that's really hitting its creative stride now - are interesting enough to write about; I'm just not sure who wants to read about them. Would any of my readers be interested in recaps/reviews of Sons of Anarchy or Fringe? If people want it, I'll do it.

In the meantime, a few thoughts on what I've been watching.

Sons of Anarchy just ended its second season, and boy what a season it was, with bravura performances by Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, and most especially Katey Sagal as Gemma, the hard-as-nails matriarch of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original). I don't put much stock in awards, and I keep telling myself that the Golden Globes don't mean anything, but the fact that this show was completely overlooked for a nomination really makes my blood boil. There are very few shows on television that are better written or acted, or that reach the Shakespearean levels of storytelling that SOA does. I am very sorry for everyone who does not watch it.

So, V and Flashforward are on a very LONG hiatus - V returns on March 30, FlashForward on March 4 - and I can't say that's very surprising for either show. I know ABC says the long hiatus is to protect them from NBC's Olympics coverage, but anyone with half a brain knows that both of these shows need some work. I feel more optimistic about V, but that may only be because V hasn't been on long enough to dig a hole as deep as the one FlashForward finds itself in. I will definitely be returning to V, but there's about a 50/50 chance that I'll never watch FlashForward again.

Fringe, however, has been AMAZING. John Noble as Walter Bishop has been AMAZING. The Walter/Peter relationship has grown to the point where, when the truth comes out, the fallout will be heart-breaking. I cannot wait. (returns Jan. 14)

Alright, let's wrap this up with a couple of programming notes:

1. Missed watching True Blood the first time around? Or perhaps you just want to watch it all again? Well aren't you lucky: HBO is airing a season 1 marathon beginning December 28, at 8:00 PM!

2. Fans of Deadwood's Timothy Olyphant and Elmore Leonard, take note:

That looks goooood.

3. Last but not least, how about some return dates?

Modern Family, Jan. 6
How I Met Your Mother, Jan. 11

Mea Culpa

I have been a terrible blogger as of late. Partly to blame are changes in work life (meaning: I have to actually work more during the day!) and real life; and I think that as a result I have gravitated toward Twitter, which is essentially micro-blogging - quick and dirty. I'm also feeling bereft of things to blog about in any kind of depth, particularly when it comes to television. LOST cannot return soon enough! In the meantime, I'll keep posting my thoughts under TV Talk.

I realized the other day that I completely forgot about doing an advent calendar this year! I was going to skip it entirely, but then I realized that today is December 13, which means I can do 12 days of Christmas instead! (shifted by one day, granted)

So to start things off, today we have a Kiefer in a Christmas tree.

It devoured much of Mr. Watanabe's personal fortune, he says, which he built up over more than two decades running his family's party-favor import business in Omaha, Neb. It also benefitted the two casinos' parent company, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which derived about 5.6% of its Las Vegas gambling revenue from Mr. Watanabe that year.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. Ours was very nice, even if I am regretting the way I gorged myself on all of that food. I swear, I must have eaten the equivalent of an entire pumpkin pie over the 4-day weekend - not to mention the leftover turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes!

One of the things I wanted to do this weekend (besides eat) was catch up on my blogging; but, as you can see, I did not. I was actually quite productive in other areas - mostly around-the-house stuff - just not here.

So, time to play catch-up. To start things off, some photos from a local parade that we just learned about this year: The Stamford, CT UBS Parade, which is apparently held the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Who knew?! It's like a (very) mini Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, with giant character balloons and Santa Claus making an appearance at the end. Lots of fun!

ABC has temporarily halted production on sci-fi drama "FlashForward.":

"An Alphabet spokesman says the move was built in to the schedule from the beginning of the season and was positioned early on to 'boost the writing. … They want to maintain he high quality of the show, and this gives the writers the opportunity to do so.'"

Uh, yeah. Good luck with that!

Busy Busy Busy!

I had a very busy weekend. On Saturday I spent the day in NYC with a very good old friend and I saw the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for the very first time. In fact, that was the first time I had ever been to Radio City Music Hall. Then yesterday I went to a local parade that's like a mini-Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade (very mini), with giant balloons and everything! It was so cool.

Hopefully I'll get some photos posted tonight. And I'm working on a "Things on TV that make me thankful" post that I'll be getting up soon.

11.19.2009

Let the countdown begin!

We have a LOST premiere date:

At first I was like, "Tuesday? WTF? Why Tuesday?" Then I stopped spazzing long enough to realize that Tuesday night at 9:00 is PERFECT for me. I broke up with American Idol a long time ago, and I don't watch anything on Tuesday nights at 9:00 right now, so there's nothing to conflict with; and if V stays in the 8:00 slot, that'll be an awesome 2-hour block.

Yay!

The worst actor of his generation.

Those of you who know me and know how I feel about Nicholas Cage (hate him!*) will not be surprised by how much I LOVE this:

"Nicolas Cage is completely broke. One theory is that he spent money more frivolously than the people who paid to see Wicker Man in theaters. Our theory at Gawker.TV is that he is the worst actor ever. Here's proof."

* With the notable exception of Raising Arizona

TV Talk: A re-assessment and a couple of re-affirmations.

V - This week's episode was so much better than the previous that it renewed my interest to the point that I actually can't wait until next week. That's amazing considering I was ready to give it up altogether a week ago. Even the reveal of Lisa being Anna's daughter and their implied plans for Tyler has made the "rebellious teenage son" storyline palatable. All it took was some good writing, better pacing and a plot that move forward. Of course, now that it's getting good there's only one episode left until the show goes on hiatus until March of next year. I hope the new showrunner is able to continue with the increase in quality, and then some.

Tuesday's episode of Sons of Anarchy was the best of the series so far (I know! I keep saying that!), and that is saying something. It was all about coming clean, with Gemma getting the ball rolling last week with her sit-down with Clay and Jax (I won't say what they talked about, in case you haven't seen the show). It was as if her courage, her willingness to bare her soul and risk injury to her pride, set an example for the rest of the Club, as secrets were spilled and enemies faced and revenge was taken in the most surprising of ways. Please watch this show.

Modern Family continues to be my favorite new show. Last night's episode was laugh out loud funny: I loved Manny drinking his espresso and getting spritzed in the face by Jay, Phil's list of gifts he wants and Mitchell and Cam burping Sal, and -- Oh, don't take my word for it, just watch it!

TV Talk: They're making their lists already.

With the end of the 00's fast approaching, a lot of television critics and pop culture aficionados have gotten a head start on compiling their "Best of the Decade" lists. The Onion's A.V. Club has theirs, including a list of the best TV series of the past ten years. It's a great list, but I was a little shocked that, while I feel like I watch a lot of TV, I've only seen 13 of the 30 shows (not even half! although those 13 are my favorites). For a few of them (Six Feet Under, Dexter and The West Wing), my interest (and/or ability to watch) waned before they wrapped up.

Of the shows that I haven't seen, The Wire (#1) and Mad Men (#5) are definitely on my Watch-on-DVD-Next-Summer List (I don't have the time I'd like to dedicate to it until summer), Breaking Bad and Venture Bros. intrigue me, and I may eventually check them out, but I'm OK with missing the rest.

How about you? How many on this list have you seen? Were there any shows that you feel were overlooked?

V - So, what did I think of V? Well, if you had asked me that last week, after the pilot, this is how I would have responded (from an e-mail I wrote to friends):

I liked it. I liked the way they cut to the chase, dispensing with most of the major plot points of the original miniseries in the first episode - they're lizards, they're up to no good, etc., there are rebel/good Vs - instead of dragging out what a lot of people who watched the original series already knew. I thought the opening was very effective. Even though I knew what was coming, I was still on the edge of my seat. I think the cues to 9/11 and Erica's "Counterterrorism Unit" FBI badge got me in the right frame of mind.

I'm very happy with the cast, too. Elizabeth Mitchell is great, of course, and Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin from Firefly, and Tom from The 4400 (Father Jack) - love them all. Scott Wolfe has never done anything for me, but he's a good choice for the news anchor type. Morris Chestnut's a good actor, too.
But today is a different day, the second episode aired last night, and overall I'm pretty disappointed. Not enough to stop watching, but enough to make me think about it. If last night's episode is anything to go on, this is just a whiff of a show, with no depth whatsoever, terrible dialogue and even some pretty bad acting from some pretty good actors. I'm hoping for better next week.

FlashForward - I'm still struggling with this show, and I won't bore you with repeating the same criticisms over and over. The problems are still there, but they keep doing things with the overall mystery that keep me coming back. Last week's was one of their better episodes, mostly because of the game-changing death of Agent Gough, who had a flash forward and so according to the show's mythology so far, is supposed to be alive on April 29, 2010. He was able to take control of his fate (sadly), so what does that mean for everyone else? Does Demitri have to die? Is Olivia pre-destined to cheat on Mark? (do I care? NO.)? It's an interesting wrinkle.

Fringe - Not much to say about last week's episode except that it was a solid stand-alone that provided a more in-depth look at Broyles, which included the fact that he was married and has kids (or a kid, not sure). If you ever find yourself thinking, "Agent Broyles needs to smile more", you're wrong. He really doesn't. Oh, and that ash effect was AMAZING.

Sons of Anarchy - With the airing of last night's exceptional episode, Sons of Anarchy officially joined the ranks of the absolute best dramas on television. I'm going to cheat here and share a quote from Alan Sepinwall's review:
"Balm," the best episode so far of this exceptional second season of "Sons of Anarchy," comes along at a perfect time. "Mad Men" has just gone on hiatus. "Breaking Bad" won't be back until sometime in 2010. If you don't have DirecTV, "Friday Night Lights" won't be on TV until next summer. So "Sons of Anarchy" is, at the moment, the best drama on television, and an episode like "Balm" makes it clear the title shouldn't just be by default. Pound-for-pound, this series is as engrossing, as funny and as moving as all those others.
I don't know how the writers manage to juggle all of the intricate plot threads they have going on, and do it so well. When one of those threads pays off big time, like it did last night, it's a beautiful thing. The final scene was a long time coming, and when it did, it was so surprising, so moving, that I was in tears. Season 1 just came out on DVD. You should check it out.

Sammy Sosa is white now.

Not a profound sentiment, no, but sometimes that's all I'm left with when I read about this kind of stuff.

On the 'death' of Juliet

At first, I wasn't too sure about the Juliet character on LOST. I don't think you were really supposed to like her all that much in the beginning. But she really did grown into a great character, and Elizabeth Mitchell did such a fine job portraying her. And she and Sawyer made such a great couple.

That's why the end of last season's finale, when Juliet fell down the shaft and set off the bomb, was so heartbreaking. Entertainment Weekly talked to Mitchell, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse about what it was like to shoot that episode and their thoughts about Juliet's 'death'. There is a sense of finality to their answers, as if to say that Juliet is actually dead, but they also say she will re-appear in the final season, so who knows? This is LOST, after all.

The Visitors arrive tomorrow night!

As far as I'm concerned, this show has 2 things going for it right now: 1) I was a big fan of the original 80s miniseries, (as cheesy as it has proven to be) and 2) I like a lot of the cast: Juliet from LOST, Tom from The 4400 and Wash and Inara from Firefly. Those people alone are enough for me to want to at least check it out.

I am preparing myself for large-scale disappointment but hoping for the best. It doesn't have to be amazing. Just better than FlashForward. And really, that's not too mush to ask. Really, I'm serious, it won't take much to be better than FlashForward.

The sublime and the ridiculous collide.

Drive Thru Reviews

I watched a bunch of 2-year-old movies when I was home sick yesterday.

Waitress - Sweet, quirky romantic comedy that I really enjoyed, starring Kerri Russell and my boy Nathan Fillion. Sad footnote: Adrienne Shelley, who wrote, directed and co-starred in the film, was murdered before it was released.

Death At A Funeral - I haven't been so disappointed in a movie in a very long time. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know I have a healthy appreciation for British humor, but this movie? Not funny. I actually almost turned it off halfway through, and I NEVER do that.

Dan In Real Life - Another family/romantic comedy, no new ground covered here, but very enjoyable. I think Juliette Binoche as the love interest helped to elevate things, and of course I love Steve Carrell.

For those of you who have been following along, Nathan Fillion has finally revealed (Twittered) what the 'Firefly' easter egg was on Monday's episode of 'Castle':

  1. How did the catalyzer come to my possesion? I got it the same way Mal would. I stole it.
  2. Look closely, when Mal comes out the door- under the gun, under the boat, just to the right. It's a nothin' part, till ya need one.
  3. It looks like @andreajean915 found the Easter Egg. Haven't checked everyone's guess but she's the first. It was... the CATALYZER. BSTL.

Modern Family

Modern Family is the first new comedy I have watched in, oh God, years. No, wait, I started watching the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton show "Back To You", which, well, that didn't end so well, did it?

Anyway, Modern Family...Great show! It's like if Arrested Development and The Office had a baby. A baby that is more politically correct, granted, and definitely less batshit crazy than the Bluths (something I miss), but MF owes a great debt to both of those shows.

My favorite character: Little 11-yr-old Manny, the wise-beyond-his-years, coffee-drinking, ultra-sensitive, most mature character on the show, is the step-son of the Pritchett patriarch Jay. The actor who plays him is perfect.

Honorable mention for favorite: Cam. Watch him here, in the football getup:
